about

Jess’s version of Jeff Sturgeon most closely resembles Bruce Molskys. Learned on assignment as a staff musician for Nic Gareiss’s flatfooting class in Elkins, WV around 2012. It comes from John Salyer of East KY, and was recorded by his sons Grover & Glen at home using a home disc-cutting machine in 1941 and 1942. Salyer was known for frequently playing many cross tunings, and these two tunes are some of my favorites to play that way.

Jess truly can’t remember where she learned Chinquapin Hunting. Information on sources is mixed, either from Knott County, East KY fiddler Hiram Stamper, Hilllsville, VA’s Norman Edmonds, or central Appalachian fiddler Delbert Hughes. John Hartford transcribed it as “Chinky Pin” from playing of Carroll Best of Waynesville, NC.
